The Benefits of Recycling Glass Bottles
Recycling is great for the environment in more ways than one.
It reduces waste in landfills, saves energy on manufacturing new materials, and preserves habitats for wildlife.
As many local Massachusite know, the 2010-2020 Solid Waste Master Plan, released by the Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) in 2013, stated that every year, Massachusetts throws away enough material to fill 74 Fenway Parks.
Just think about that for a second…
One of the goals in the plan is to reduce solid waste disposal 30% by 2020, from 6,550,000 tons of disposal in 2008 to 4,550,000 tons of disposal by 2020 (source).
Does Recycling Glass Help the Environment?
All recycling is fantastic, but recycling glass bottles is a step above the rest. Once your milk bottle has been reused to the max, a new one can be made using the materials from that exact same bottle.
How Long Can Glass Be Reused?
Recycling glass is a relatively easy process.
The glass first gets crushed down into fine pieces called cullet. Any contaminants are removed, and it is then melted. The cullet then undergoes a decolouring process to produce the correct colour glass. Then, in the final stage the glass is moulded into the final product.
The Never Ending Life Of Glass
This recycling process takes place without any loss in quality, and can be repeated time and time again. Not only can glass milk bottles be reused countless times, but they are easily recyclable.
Yet, another reason drinking milk in glass bottles is better. Find a dairy near you in Massachusetts or Rhode Island delivering milk in glass straight to your door!
